Maduro Claims 5,000 Russian Missiles as Trump Eyes Military Action

UPDATE: Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has just announced that the nation possesses 5,000 Russian-made Igla-S anti-aircraft missiles, claiming they are strategically placed in “key air defense positions.” This declaration comes amid rising tensions as U.S. President Donald Trump considers military action against Venezuela, intensifying the already fraught geopolitical landscape.
During a televised military event on Wednesday, Maduro stated, “Any military force in the world knows the power of the Igla-S,” emphasizing that these missiles are capable of targeting small aerial threats, including drones and low-flying aircraft. The short-range systems are light enough for a single soldier to carry, enhancing Venezuela’s defensive posture against potential U.S. intervention.
The backdrop of this announcement features a significant U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, with 4,500 Marines and sailors deployed to bolster operations against drug trafficking and demonstrate military might. Trump has openly discussed expanding military operations into Venezuela as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at undermining Maduro’s regime, which has long been a thorn in the side of Washington.
In recent statements, Trump confirmed that he has authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela. He remarked, “We are certainly looking at land now,” highlighting a shift in strategy as U.S. forces have already established control over maritime routes. Lawmakers from both parties have raised concerns regarding the legality of military strikes targeting alleged drug trafficking boats off the Venezuelan coast.
As the situation unfolds, Maduro has ordered the repositioning of troops and mobilization of what he claims to be over 8 million reservists, asserting that the Venezuelan people are united and prepared to counter any external threats. He emphasized, “They have the means to once again defeat this open conspiracy against the peace and stability of Venezuela.”
The Russian Igla-S missiles, according to Rosoboronexport, have a range of up to 6,000 meters and can engage targets at altitudes of up to 3,500 meters. While CNN has not independently verified Maduro’s claims regarding the number of missiles, experts acknowledge their presence in Venezuela’s military arsenal.
As the international community watches closely, the stakes are escalating. Maduro’s military posture and Trump’s aggressive rhetoric signal a potential flashpoint in U.S.-Venezuelan relations. The coming days will be crucial, as both sides prepare for what could be a dramatic confrontation.
