UPDATE: The East Lansing Police Department has confirmed the identity of a woman found deceased in the Red Cedar River as 32-year-old Meagan Turner, a Canadian doctoral student at Michigan State University (MSU). Her body was discovered last Monday, close to Cedar Village, just east of the MSU campus, according to reports from CBS News Detroit.

Authorities have stated that, as of now, there is no evidence of foul play. Investigations are ongoing, and police are currently awaiting toxicology reports, which are expected to take two to four weeks to process. Turner’s family has been notified of her passing, raising urgent concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police Chief Jen Brown emphasized the commitment to a thorough investigation, stating, “

ELPD will continue to investigate all options and leads in this case, but we do not have reason at this point to believe there is an ongoing risk to public safety.

” However, the possibility of drugs or alcohol being contributing factors remains unconfirmed.

This tragic incident echoes a previous case from October 2021, when Brendan Santo, an 18-year-old MSU student, was also found dead in the same river. His death was ruled an accidental drowning, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 at the time of his death.

As police continue to investigate Turner’s death, they are actively seeking information from the public. Anyone with relevant details is urged to come forward.

The local community is deeply affected by this incident, with many expressing their condolences and concern for Turner’s family. The discovery of her body has renewed discussions about safety measures in the area surrounding the university.
