UPDATE: The New Mexico Sexual Assault Helpline has just marked its first anniversary, responding to over 1,200 inquiries since its launch on October 21, 2024. This significant milestone underscores the helpline’s vital role as a free, confidential resource for survivors, according to Alexandria Taylor, executive director of the New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs.

The helpline operates 24/7 via phone, text, or online chat, providing immediate support to those in need. Taylor emphasized that for many, reaching out may be their first step in addressing their trauma. “We want to honor what it means for someone to reach out,” she stated.

As the helpline celebrated its anniversary on Monday, October 27, it released data revealing that responders engaged in 1,141 phone calls, 90 online chats, and 50 text messages over the past year. Users hailed from 25 counties across New Mexico, with call durations varying from 30 seconds to 2 hours and 50 minutes.

The need for this service arose during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, when conversations with stakeholders highlighted a significant gap in support for survivors. The coalition’s 2024 crime victimization survey revealed that 54% of New Mexicans reported experiencing sexual assault or rape in their lifetime, yet 68% did not seek professional help.

The newly released data shows that around 80% of callers sought someone to talk to, while 20% requested referrals for services like sexual assault nurse examinations. “One of the most important things we could offer survivors is connection, support, and time to think about what they want and need,” said Rachel Cox, deputy director of programs at the coalition.

The helpline staff, consisting of seven responders and two co-directors, have undergone 120 hours of training. Their diverse backgrounds range from nursing to grief support, ensuring a compassionate approach to those reaching out for help. Services are available in both English and Spanish, with additional interpretation options offered, making the helpline accessible to a broader audience.

Data privacy remains a priority, with callers not required to provide personal information, and all conversations are confidential. “The helpline’s responders are real people — not bots,” Taylor affirmed, emphasizing that no conversations are recorded.

In conjunction with the anniversary, the coalition has launched a public awareness campaign, featuring Amanda Machon, a local actor, in two public service announcement videos. The campaign aims to encourage sharing the helpline’s number widely. Local establishments can also request coasters with the slogan “Can I give you my number?” printed alongside the helpline’s contact information.

The coalition is holding a public celebration on Monday, October 27, from 6 to 8 PM at Tractor Brewing Wells Park in Albuquerque. The event is free and open to the public, with an RSVP available online.

Looking forward, Taylor expressed the need for continued funding, seeking $1 million in recurring support from the New Mexico Legislature to sustain the helpline’s services. “We’re not at a place yet where there’s going to be no sexual violence in New Mexico,” said Cox. “But what the helpline can offer is a shift from isolation to connection, reducing shame and guilt.”

As the helpline continues to evolve, it remains committed to providing essential support for those affected by sexual violence in New Mexico.
