Advocacy Specialist Jeremy Daffern to Lead Urgent ‘Listening Differently’ Event
UPDATE: Advocacy specialist Jeremy Daffern will host a pivotal event titled “Listening Differently” on October 28, 2023, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Frey Conference Suite in the Kanter Student Center, Wayne State College. The event is free, open to the public, and food will be provided, making it an accessible opportunity for all.
Daffern, representing the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, aims to foster understanding and connection within the community. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern stated. He emphasizes the importance of learning from those who navigate a world designed primarily for hearing individuals.
Doors for the event will open at 5:30 PM, allowing attendees to settle in before the presentation begins. Daffern, a Gallaudet University alumnus with extensive international development experience, will share his journey of resilience and hope as a deaf individual.
The evening will feature Daffern alongside ASL interpreter Meghann Cassidy, who will facilitate a conversation about the challenges faced by those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Participants will engage in discussions that promote empathy and understanding, culminating in a unique session where attendees will “listen differently” to members of the Wayne State Department of Music.
This event is sponsored by Wayne State’s public and global health honors students, the service-learning program, and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, reflecting a collaborative effort to enhance community awareness and inclusivity.
What’s Next: Community members, educators, and advocates are encouraged to attend this important gathering. As the event approaches, it’s vital for those interested in advocacy and inclusivity to take part in this enriching experience.
