UPDATE: King’s College in Wilkes-Barre hosted its exciting annual event, “Things that Go Boom in the Night,” on October 28, 2025, attracting families eager for thrilling Halloween science demonstrations. The event featured a variety of captivating activities designed to ignite children’s interest in science, making the night an unforgettable experience.
Families flocked to the college as faculty and students from the Department of Chemistry and Physics showcased a series of spectacular experiments. Attendees had the chance to create colorful flames, experiment with “alien eyeballs,” and watch “exploding eggs” and “oozing Jack-O-Lanterns.”
“It’s often these kinds of moments that first sparked our love of science,” said Dr. Julie Belanger, chair of the Chemistry and Physics Department. She highlighted that making science fun is a key part of the event’s tradition for both faculty and students.
The energy was palpable as children eagerly participated in hands-on activities. Seven-year-old Zynnia Peters from Wilkes-Barre reacted with delight after dipping a balloon in liquid nitrogen, watching it shrink dramatically. Another young attendee, Joseph Booth III, only two years old, cheered enthusiastically as he raised his hands to volunteer for one of the demonstrations.
The event not only entertained but also educated, providing children with memorable experiences that could inspire future scientific pursuits. It showcased King’s College’s commitment to engaging the community through interactive learning opportunities.
This year’s “Things that Go Boom in the Night” was more than just a Halloween celebration; it was a vibrant festival of science that brought families together, encouraging curiosity and exploration in a festive environment.
As the evening concluded, the excitement lingered in the air, leaving families buzzing with stories of their favorite experiments. Mark your calendars for next year’s event to experience the magic of science firsthand!
