Humane Society Launches New Catio for Adoptable Cats Today!

BREAKING NEWS: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has just unveiled an innovative new outdoor space, the Ila Emerson Memorial Catio, designed to enhance the lives of adoptable cats. Located in Vallejo, California, this state-of-the-art facility allows shelter cats to bask in the fresh air and sunshine while remaining safe, marking a significant development for both the felines and potential adopters.

The catio features secure, wrap-around hard netting and multi-level platforms that provide cats with cozy perches to relax and socialize. Thanks to generous donations, the space is equipped with cat trees, sensory toys, and soft bedding, creating an inviting environment. “Having the space to come out and roam benefits everybody,” stated Kristina George, Cat Staff member at HSNB. She added that this new catio will help the kitties grow socially, and “happy social cats get adopted.”

Scheduled meet-and-greets in the catio will provide adoption seekers with a unique opportunity to interact with the cats in a comfortable setting. This initiative aims to streamline the adoption process and foster connections between cats and potential owners. The project was completed in just seven weeks and was made possible with contributions from local businesses, including Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber.

The catio is named in honor of Ila Emerson, a beloved Vallejo resident and animal advocate, who left her estate to HSNB. “It’s an incredible space for them,” remarked Carol Stillson, HSNB Director. Before this enhancement, the shelter’s capacity was limited to two indoor rooms for approximately 60 cats, leading to confinement issues. With this new outdoor access, the shelter can provide a taste of nature, crucial for the cats’ overall well-being.

As part of their ongoing commitment to animal welfare, HSNB is also preparing to kick off an annual adoption special on November 1. This initiative includes reduced fees for black and tuxedo cats, addressing the stigma often associated with these animals during this time of year. Starting November, adopters will receive $50 off kitten fees and $25 off fees for cats aged six months and older. Additionally, adopting a pair of cats will grant a discount of $50, making it easier for families to welcome multiple pets into their homes.

HSNB Board President Joseph Hayden emphasized the shelter’s dedication to responsible adoptions, stating, “We do our homework… because we want to ensure it’s in the best interest of the animal.” The shelter prides itself on its low return rates and thorough vetting processes for potential pet parents.

For those interested in adopting or scheduling a visit, more information is available on the Humane Society of the North Bay’s official website. This new catio is not just a facility; it’s a lifeline for many cats looking for their forever homes. Don’t miss the chance to meet your new furry friend!
