Boulder County Traffic Disruptions: Major Projects Underway Now

UPDATE: Major traffic disruptions are underway in Boulder County as multiple construction projects kick off this week. Residents and commuters are urged to plan ahead and expect significant delays as crews implement crucial improvements through early 2024.

Starting immediately, improvements on 28th Street from Pearl to Iris are underway, enhancing multimodal travel options. As part of this project, the northbound 28th and Valmont Road RTD Stop No. 17992 is temporarily relocated just south of the Valmont intersection. This relocation will remain in effect until December 31, 2023.

In another critical development, crews will begin replacing the bridge over Fourmile Canyon Creek on 19th Street. Northbound traffic will be fully closed between Sumac and Upland. A detour for vehicles and RTD services will be established via Quince. This project is expected to conclude by April 1, 2024.

The 63rd Street waterline replacement project is also causing significant disruptions. The roads, including 63rd, Andrus, and 62nd, will be closed from Jay to Valmont for through traffic, with access maintained for businesses and residents. Completion of this project is anticipated by April 1, 2024.

Additionally, milling and paving operations on Colo. 7 will continue through late October, with expected completion by December 15, 2023. Expect alternating double-lane closures between 28th Street and Cherryvale Road from 7 a.m. to midnight on weekdays.

Further north in Boulder County, Sugarloaf Road will see lane closures due to culvert replacements at Betasso Road. A temporary three-way traffic signal will be installed to manage delays, with work anticipated to last into November. Access to Betasso Preserve will remain open.

In the city of Boulder, the 63rd Street waterline replacement project will impact traffic through February 2024. During this time, 63rd Street, Andrus Road, and 62nd Street will be closed between Jay and Valmont, allowing only local and business access. Expect shifts in traffic on 63rd Street between Gunbarrel Avenue and the railroad crossing.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is also actively working on safety and mobility improvements along Colo. 119 (Diagonal Highway), with the project expected to wrap up in spring 2027.

In Erie, significant rehabilitation work is being carried out on the Prince Lake Dam at 111th Street and Flatiron Meadows Boulevard. This project, managed by Sema, is set to continue through March 2026 and includes rebuilding sections of the dam along with drainage infrastructure. While no lane closures are planned, brief delays may occur as work trucks access the site.

Additionally, lane closures will be in effect on Erie Parkway and Glacier Drive for traffic signal installation through December.

Weld County is also imposing closures on WCR 1.5 and WCR 3 for maintenance work. These roads will be fully closed from Erie to WCR 3 and between WCR 10 and 10.5 until November 26, 2023, with 24-hour closures expected.

Residents are advised to stay informed and adjust travel plans accordingly as these crucial improvements unfold.
