Solano County Celebrates 25 Years of Literacy Support at Luncheon

UPDATE: The 25th Annual Solano County Authors Luncheon took place on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the fight for literacy across the region. Hosted by the Solano Library Foundation, the event drew together authors, community leaders, and supporters, all united to promote essential literacy programs.

As guests sipped on sparkling mimosas and engaged in lively discussions, the atmosphere buzzed with inspiration and hope. This year’s event featured an array of silent and live auctions, allowing attendees to bid on exclusive items while mingling with renowned authors.

Foundation Board President Ravi Shakar opened the luncheon by emphasizing the event’s importance in supporting literacy initiatives that benefit all ages in Solano County. “We truly appreciate your participation in this event,” Shakar stated, underscoring that the foundation’s success relies on community generosity.

The keynote speaker, Mychal Threets, a celebrated former Solano County librarian and host of the rebooted Reading Rainbow series, captivated the audience with his powerful message of resilience. Threets, who received a standing ovation, shared insights from his recently published picture book, I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy. He emphasized the importance of libraries as welcoming spaces, stating, “The library is for you — a place you will always belong.”

In a deeply personal moment, Threets reflected on his struggles with depression, revealing that just two years ago, he faced thoughts of suicide. “I was dying two years ago,” he shared, moving the audience with his story of survival. “I was in a dark place and didn’t want to be alive. I’ll never fully know why I’m still here, but I am happy to be alive — and to be here with you.” His heartfelt plea for continued support for literacy programs struck a chord, as he called them “lifelines” for many.

The event also featured Dr. Jeff Gaborko, a pediatrician from Kaiser Permanente, who spoke on the critical role of reading in child development. “One of the most consistent traits among healthy adults is having a high school diploma,” Gaborko noted, reinforcing the link between literacy and lifelong success. He encouraged parents to engage in reading with their children early and often.

Several local authors showcased their works, including:
Dr. Genea S. Brice, Vallejo’s first Poet Laureate.
Dr. June Gillam, an award-winning crime fiction writer from Fairfield.
Dr. Gary Matsumura, a retired obstetrician whose memoir, Adventures in Obstetrics, offers insights into his medical career.

The luncheon concluded with Shakar’s passionate appeal for ongoing support of literacy programs, emphasizing their transformative impact on the community. “These initiatives are especially important now more than ever,” he stated.

As the event wrapped up, attendees left with a renewed commitment to fostering literacy in Solano County, knowing their participation helps create a brighter future for both children and adults. With such compelling narratives and community spirit, the 25th Annual Solano County Authors Luncheon not only celebrated past achievements but also ignited a powerful call to action for literacy advocacy.
