Election Day in Austin: Polls Open, Wait Times Rise!

UPDATE: Election Day is here, and polls across the Austin area are now open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today! Voters in Travis and Williamson Counties are facing critical decisions, with wait times at polling locations being tracked closely.

According to officials, 13% of registered voters in Travis County cast their ballots during early voting, while Williamson County saw around 10%. This year, Texas voters have 17 proposed amendments to the state constitution and a contentious tax rate hike in Austin on the ballot.

“These decisions will significantly impact the community,” said a Travis County election official.

While Hays and Bastrop Counties do not track wait times, both Travis and Williamson Counties provide real-time updates. Voters can access maps and lists of polling locations to find their nearest site.

Today’s voting is crucial, especially with Austin’s proposed tax rate increase tied to a $6.3 billion budget approved by the city council. If voters approve this hike, residents of a $500,000 home could see an increase of about $300 in city taxes. Conversely, if it fails, the increase would be around $100.

Voters must be prepared with valid identification. Acceptable forms include a Texas driver’s license, election ID certificate, or U.S. passport among others. Those without ID can complete a Reasonable Impediment Declaration and present an alternative form of ID such as a utility bill or bank statement.

It’s important to note that cell phones are prohibited at polling booths in Texas. Voters should be aware that any violation could result in being asked to leave the premises.

The stakes are high this Election Day with significant fiscal choices on the table, including billions in property tax cuts and local tax increases. Voters also face decisions on various amendments that could address issues like bail limits, parental rights, and funding for water projects and technical colleges.
