UPDATE: First Baptist Church of Dallas is navigating an urgent rebuilding effort following a devastating four-alarm fire that destroyed its historic sanctuary last year. As the church prepares for a full restoration by Easter 2028, staff members are rallying together, demonstrating remarkable unity and resilience.
The fire left the institution’s operations disrupted, with many employees feeling “scattered.” As of August 2023, the church offices still lacked permanent power, according to Ben Lovvorn, the church’s senior executive pastor. In the face of these challenges, maintaining clear communication and morale among the staff and congregation has become a top priority.
“We’ve been very purposeful about communicating with our staff — and our congregation — so that they know and understand what’s going on, and that they are a part of the process,” Lovvorn stated. This proactive approach has contributed to exceptional team cohesion, with the entire staff remaining intact despite the crisis. Lovvorn emphasized that while such a situation could lead to significant turnover elsewhere, First Baptist has successfully avoided this pitfall.
The church serves a vibrant community of 16,000 members, and Lovvorn believes that the shared faith among staff members is pivotal in their recovery efforts. “Finding the right people — and getting them in the right seats on the bus — is key to tackling whatever obstacles you’re presented with along the way,” he added.
To foster this spirit of togetherness, First Baptist has implemented regular engagement activities, such as monthly all-staff leadership luncheons. For example, the staff enjoyed a meal from Babe’s Chicken during their August gathering. Additionally, the church holds “staff chapel” sessions, allowing employees to pause their daily tasks and pray together.
Throughout its storied history of over 155 years in downtown Dallas, First Baptist has faced both triumphs and trials. “But God has always been faithful in providing for us and seeing us through every season,” Lovvorn reflected, highlighting the enduring strength of the church community.
As the rebuilding process unfolds, the focus remains on creating a supportive environment for staff and members alike. The church’s commitment to communication and teamwork during this challenging period exemplifies its dedication to overcoming adversity, reinforcing the idea that they are indeed part of something greater.
