PCM Football Falls Short in Quarterfinal Clash with Wilton

The PCM Mustangs’ football season concluded with a disappointing 21-17 loss to the Wilton Beavers in the Class 2A quarterfinals on March 15, 2024. The Mustangs initially dominated the game, leading 10-0 after the first quarter and extending their advantage to 17-0 by halftime. However, the Beavers mounted a remarkable comeback in the second half, securing their place in the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

In a strong opening, Lewis Daye Jr. scored the first touchdown of the evening for the Mustangs, followed by a career-best 41-yard field goal from Dominic Witt. The Mustangs further solidified their lead with a touchdown run from Chase Wagaman, bringing the score to 17-0 at halftime.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the second half when Wilton, holding a record of 9-2, began to rally. They scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 17-8. With just 7:19 remaining, the Beavers scored again, making it a three-point game. In a thrilling finish, Wilton secured the victory with a game-winning touchdown with only 1:36 left on the clock.

Wagaman showcased his skills, completing 15 of 22 passes for 160 yards and one interception. Daye Jr. led the rushing attack with 92 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries. Wagaman also contributed 51 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. The Mustangs collectively rushed for 181 yards, averaging 3.7 yards per carry.

Wide receiver Gavin Steenhoek was the standout performer with 85 yards on five receptions. Jaden Houser made a career-high six catches for 38 yards, while Ivan Shannon added an 18-yard reception. Daye’s impressive season saw him rush for 1,097 yards, ranking 10th in Class 2A, while Steenhoek’s 848 receiving yards placed him fourth.

Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Jax Strait, who recorded 10 tackles. Trent Nickelson achieved a career-best 9.5 tackles along with two tackles for loss. Other notable contributions came from Mason Hjortshoj with 6.5 tackles, and Harrison Brinegar with six tackles. Wagaman also excelled defensively, grabbing two interceptions, which places him at the top of Class 2A with eight picks for the season.

On the opposing side, Gunner Edwards led the Beavers with 192 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Rushing leader Noah Gray contributed 80 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Hayden Hill added 68 yards. Bryer Putman was a key target with five catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Wilton’s defense was equally formidable, with Gray, Hill, and Thatcher Murguia each recording 10 tackles. The Beavers enter the semifinals riding a seven-game winning streak, having advanced from the 1A semifinals the previous season.

The Mustangs’ efforts this season showcased their talent and determination, finishing with a record of 9-2. Despite the quarterfinal loss, the team displayed resilience and skill throughout the campaign.
