A Massachusetts couple has defied conventional retirement norms by continuing to run their furniture business, which they founded nearly 50 years ago. Gerhart Klein, aged 92, and his wife Brigitte have turned their passion for creating comfortable, functional furniture into a thriving enterprise known as Brigger by Klein Design. Their journey began in the mid-1970s when Gerhart could not find a chair that suited his taste in local stores, prompting him to craft his own.
Since relocating to their current manufacturing facility in the mid-1980s, the couple has focused on producing Scandinavian-inspired furniture made from locally sourced wood and fabrics. Gerhart Klein emphasizes the comfort of their creations, stating, “I make comfortable chairs.” Their commitment to quality and design has allowed them to maintain an active role in the business, which they refer to as their “retirement job.”
From Engineer to Entrepreneur
Gerhart Klein’s journey into furniture making coincided with his career as a chemical engineer at a company that later became Duracell. By 1985, he made the pivotal decision to leave his corporate role and dedicate himself fully to his furniture business. “It’s an interesting challenge that is definitely what I like as my retirement job,” he remarked.
Brigitte Klein, who has been by Gerhart’s side for over 62 years, plays a crucial role in the company’s operations. The name “Brigger” creatively combines their first names, symbolizing their partnership in both life and business. Gerhart attributes much of their success to Brigitte, noting, “That’s why we’re still together because I come up with something that could be improved. She’s quality control.”
Adapting to Change
Despite their lengthy tenure in the industry, the Kleins show no signs of slowing down. Recently, they have relaunched their website to adapt to the increasing trend of online sales. This initiative reflects their understanding of contemporary market demands while ensuring their products remain accessible to a broader audience.
The couple’s approach to retirement challenges the stereotype of leisurely days spent away from work. Instead, they exemplify how passion and dedication can lead to continued success and fulfillment in later years. As Gerhart Klein continues to innovate in furniture design, he remains a testament to the idea that retirement can be redefined through personal interests and entrepreneurial spirit.
