URGENT UPDATE: Nashville Police Commander Scott Byrd, aged 50, has tragically passed away after suffering a heart attack at his home on Monday. After dedicating 25 years to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Byrd was a respected leader and mentor within the force, overseeing specialized units and training many officers.
Chief John Drake expressed profound sorrow at Byrd’s passing, stating, “Scott was a close friend to many and was an outstanding person and police officer.” He further noted, “He exuded a calm command presence, was thoughtful and deliberate in his decision making, and was an incredible person to be around,” highlighting the deep impact Byrd made on his colleagues and community.
Joining the MNPD on January 16, 2000, Byrd rose through the ranks from Sergeant to Lieutenant, then Captain, and ultimately became Commander in December 2020. He played a significant role in critical incidents, including the 2023 Covenant School active shooter response, showcasing his commitment to public safety.
Byrd held advanced degrees from Cumberland University and is survived by his wife, April Byrd, and their three children. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Spring Hill Funeral Home, with details forthcoming.
