Democratic Party of Korea leader Jeong Cheong-rae issued a public apology on November 15, 2023, following backlash regarding his comments about former professional gamer Ma Jae-yoon. During his visit to the G-STAR 2025 event, Jeong referred to Ma, who was permanently banned for match-fixing in 2010, as a “legendary player.” This statement sparked controversy among fans of e-sports and the StarCraft community.
In a post shared on social media, Jeong expressed regret for his remarks, stating, “I sincerely apologise for having mentioned a particular individual while listing legendary StarCraft players from our memories, and in doing so causing disappointment and hurt to fans.” He acknowledged his misstep, saying, “I made a serious mistake without realising it in the moment,” and emphasized, “It was entirely my fault for not being more careful.” Jeong pledged to contribute to the growth of the e-sports and gaming industry moving forward.
Jeong’s comments came during a visit to the G-STAR 2025 exhibition held at BEXCO in Haeundae-gu, Busan, on November 14. While discussing the evolution and support of e-sports, he mentioned the status of various players, including Lim Yo-hwan, Lee Yoon-yeol, Hong Jin-ho, Ma Jae-yoon, and Park Sung-joon. His reference to Ma, who has been embroiled in scandal since his match-fixing charges, drew significant criticism.
The context of Jeong’s remarks is important. Ma Jae-yoon was expelled from the Korea e-Sports Association after being found guilty of match-fixing. In contrast, the other players named by Jeong have maintained successful careers post-retirement. Lim Yo-hwan and Hong Jin-ho have transitioned into television personalities, while Lee Yoon-yeol serves as the CEO of a gaming company. Park Sung-joon remains active in the gaming community.
Jeong’s apology highlights the sensitivity surrounding the e-sports industry, particularly regarding its history and the implications of past controversies. His commitment to supporting the sector may help restore confidence among fans who felt let down by his initial comments.
As the e-sports landscape continues to grow, public figures like Jeong play a crucial role in shaping its perception and future. His apology serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with discussing influential figures in a rapidly evolving field.
