El Tour de Tucson Honors Ralph Phillips as Rider Participation Surges

UPDATE: El Tour de Tucson kicks off Saturday, celebrating its 42nd edition with a record-breaking surge in participation. This year, nearly 11,000 riders are expected to take to the streets, up from last November’s record of 10,000. The start and finish line will be at the Tucson Convention Center at 7 a.m., marking a significant milestone for this beloved community event.

Ralph Phillips, a legendary figure in Tucson’s cycling scene, will be honored as the event’s Designated Honoree for his decades of dedication. Phillips, who first participated in El Tour in 1985, has played a vital role in shaping the event, including mapping the current 102-mile route that avoids hazards for cyclists.

“Riding through the Santa Cruz River was a whole different deal back then,” Phillips recalled, reminiscing about his early experiences. This year, his contributions to the cycling community will be celebrated during the ride, showcasing his influence over nearly four decades.

El Tour de Tucson, which has raised nearly $130 million for charities since its inception in 1983, is not just a race; it’s a symbol of community spirit and charity. Initially, only 185 riders participated, raising just $4,500 for local charities. Now, it attracts elite cyclists from around the globe, particularly during Tucson’s winter training season.

Reflecting on the growth of the event, Phillips stated, “We have people from around the world, pro riders coming in here in the winter to train.” His partnership with Tucson broadcaster Allen “Big Al” Kath has also become a staple of the event, as they have provided live commentary together for nearly 20 years.

This year’s El Tour de Tucson is particularly exciting with the recent opening of the new Tucson Velodrome, a long-awaited addition that Phillips has championed for decades. “We’ve been trying to get one in for 50 years,” he said, expressing his joy that it has come to fruition during his lifetime.

As excitement builds for Saturday’s event, participants and spectators alike are eager to see the community come together once again to support local charities and celebrate the joy of cycling. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation, and the city of Tucson is ready to embrace this annual celebration of health, community, and philanthropy.
