UPDATE: The Redwood High football team faced a crushing 20-0 loss against the Miramonte Matadors in the North Coast Section Division IV semifinals, held in Orinda on November 10, 2023. The Giants struggled in critical moments, failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities deep in enemy territory.
Despite pushing inside the Matadors’ 30-yard line on six separate occasions, Redwood was unable to convert, going just 1-for-5 on fourth-down attempts. This defeat ends their season with a 6-6 record, following a run to last year’s D-IV title game.
Redwood started strong, with quarterback Cash Ward connecting on a quick screen pass to Dylan McGrath, who surged for a 50-yard gain to Miramonte’s 25-yard line. However, that drive stalled, leading to a turnover on downs that set the tone for the rest of the game.
The Matadors quickly capitalized, with quarterback Lane Dalton launching a 60-yard pass to the Redwood 1-yard line, followed by a touchdown run that gave Miramonte a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. Redwood’s offense struggled to find its rhythm, resulting in a series of three-and-outs that left them trailing.
Mirroring their dominance, the Matadors added to their lead with a 35-yard field goal from James Rogers, pushing the score to 10-0. The Giants’ hopes dimmed further as they faced a critical play near the end zone. A potential fumble recovery by Redwood was ruled out of bounds, allowing Miramonte to maintain possession and score again, making it 17-0 with just 1:42 left in the first half.
As the second half commenced, Miramonte extended their lead to 20-0 with another field goal by Rogers, this time from 41 yards. Redwood fought back, mounting a drive that chewed up 6.5 minutes but ultimately ended with another failed fourth-down conversion.
The Giants had one final opportunity but were thwarted by a crucial interception by Miramonte’s Henry Hunt, sealing Redwood’s fate and marking a disappointing end to their season. Fans and players alike felt the sting of missed chances and unfulfilled potential.
What’s next for Redwood? As the offseason begins, the Giants will look to regroup and strategize for a stronger showing next year. As they reflect on this season, the focus will be on turning the lessons from this hard-fought battle into motivation for the future.
