SCRANTON, PA — Just moments ago, Sister Marionette Coll celebrated her extraordinary 104th birthday at the Our Lady of Peace Residence, surrounded by friends and well-wishers. The IHM nun, who has dedicated her life to service, received a warm reception in the cafeteria, where laughter and joy filled the air. “Well, it feels good,” said Sister Marionette, reflecting on the attention she received today.
Born on November 17, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Sister Marionette is part of a large Irish Catholic family, being one of twelve siblings. She joined the convent at the age of 17, a decision she recalls vividly. “When I came to the convent, I came on the night train from Pittsburgh, by myself,” she shared.
Over her remarkable life, Sister Marionette has witnessed significant historical events, including the tenure of 18 U.S. Presidents and the fall of the Soviet Union. At over eight decades older than the former country of Yugoslavia, she has a unique perspective on the changing world around her.
Despite the passage of time, her passion for working with children remains strong. She shared a cherished memory: “This one kid said to me one day, ‘You never get sick, do you?’ And I said, ‘No, so don’t plan on it. Because he wanted me to miss the damn school. I never missed a day of school,'” she laughed.
Sister Marionette plans to continue her daily Scrabble games and engaging conversations with those around her, activities she credits for her longevity. “I take that, you take it one day at a time, and you try to make that a good day,” she advised.
