US-2 Closed Near Stevens Pass After Fatal Collision Amid Snowstorm

UPDATE: US-2 is currently closed in both directions near the summit of Stevens Pass following a serious two-car head-on collision. The Washington State Patrol confirmed this critical incident on Tuesday afternoon, and no detour is available as authorities manage the situation.

Heavy snowfall is impacting travel conditions across the Cascades, with Winter Weather Advisories in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Drivers should prepare for treacherous conditions, particularly at higher elevations, as snow is expected to accumulate significantly.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the closure is at milepost 72, just east of the Stevens Pass summit. The Patrol described the collision as a “critical incident,” emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. As of 2 p.m., traction tires are mandatory on all vehicles passing through Stevens Pass. Additionally, chains are required for vehicles over 10,000 gross vehicle weight, and oversize vehicles are prohibited.

Travelers should remain alert, as compact snow and ice are already causing hazardous conditions on the roadways. Conditions are similarly challenging on I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass, where traction tires are also advised.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has issued a reminder that all vehicles must carry chains in anticipation of worsening weather. Failure to comply with “Chains Required” advisories could result in a hefty fine of $500.

Snowfall is forecasted to be heavy, with Snoqualmie and Blewett passes potentially receiving 3 to 8 inches of snow, while White and Stevens passes may see up to 10 inches. In addition, freezing rain could pose an added risk around Snoqualmie Pass during the evening hours into early Wednesday morning.

As Thanksgiving holiday travel ramps up, this situation could significantly impact drivers heading to family gatherings or holiday destinations. Authorities are urging all travelers to reconsider their travel plans and stay updated on road conditions.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
