URGENT UPDATE: Over 2,800 participants turned out for the annual Solano Turkey Trot on November 23, 2023, at Solano College, combining festive spirit with fitness. This popular event featured a 10K and 5K run, showcasing not only serious athletes but also a sea of colorful costumes that brought the Thanksgiving spirit to life.
The 17th annual Turkey Trot, organized by Medic Ambulance and Fleet Feet Vacaville, was a vibrant affair with many runners donning whimsical outfits, including turkeys, Super Mario, and Buddy the Elf. One participant even juggled through the entire 10K race, adding to the event’s lively atmosphere.
“The energy is just amazing,” said race organizer and Vacaville Fleet Feet owner Carol Gilpin. “It’s like throwing a big party on Thanksgiving.” She expressed gratitude to sponsors like Meals on Wheels and the Salvation Army of Solano for their support.
Among the colorful characters was Joel Canalas, who traveled from San Jose dressed as Super Mario, complete with an inflatable Yoshi. “I decided to dress up last night; why not?” Canalas said, noting the fun interaction with kids along the route.
In a heartwarming moment, 7-year-old Gianna South, participating for the first time, proudly displayed her medal and was thrilled to meet characters like Mario and Buddy the Elf. Her family, who discovered the race just days prior, managed to get costumes in time for the event, further showcasing the race’s community spirit.
The course featured inflatable turkeys, making it a unique challenge for some participants. Claire Meador, a freshman runner from Rodriguez High, described the race as “more of a trot than a run” due to the fun costumes. “It was very rewarding,” she said.
The highlight of the day was Jordan Kurtz, who won the 10K race with an impressive time of 31 minutes and 3 seconds, believed to be a course record. “Carol does such a great job organizing this,” Kurtz said, praising the scenic route and supportive atmosphere. His running partner, Maria Anderson, placed second in the women’s 10K and noted the event as a fun way to kick off Thanksgiving.
Taking home first place in the men’s 5K was Jonathan Charlesworth, who came from San Francisco. “It’s a fast course with a great atmosphere,” he remarked, echoing the sentiment of many runners who cherished the community vibe.
For those not racing, the costume contest was a highlight, with Dr. Chris Claus winning for his creative hand turkey outfit. “It brings everyone together—dogs, kids, and families,” Claus said, emphasizing the event’s family-friendly nature.
The Solano Turkey Trot continues to be not just a race but a celebration, fostering community spirit and bringing joy to participants of all ages. As runners gear up for their Thanksgiving feasts, the event has set the tone for gratitude and togetherness, making it a must-attend in the Vacaville area.
With the success of this year’s event, organizers are already looking ahead to next year. Stay tuned for updates as the Solano Turkey Trot promises to be even bigger and better in 2024.
