UPDATE: Timothy Newsome is lighting up Westlake this holiday season with a breathtaking display of lights that honors his late father, Eddie JLP Newsome. Just two years after his father’s passing on May 5, 2024, Timothy is determined to keep the cherished family tradition alive, ensuring the holiday spirit shines brightly for the community.
The elaborate setup at 2709 Arthur St. features an astonishing 8,080 light bulbs, 256 stake nails, 253 plastic figurines, and an array of other decorations, creating a magical atmosphere that draws in visitors from near and far. “Every year I try to reorganize the sets differently,” Timothy shared, reflecting his father’s legacy of creativity.
Timothy recalls fond memories of his father, who dedicated decades to making their home the most dazzling on the block. “He had hundreds of plastic figurines — I think I counted over 300 — and was praised yearly for having the best-lit yard,” he said. The display has become a beloved attraction, with people traveling from Texas just to experience the spectacle.
Setting up the display is no small feat; it takes Timothy approximately two weeks to prepare. This year, he’s added unique cutouts for visitors to take pictures with their faces popping through, enhancing the experience for families and friends. “I’ve also added wooden nutcrackers made by Sulphur Ag students,” he noted, emphasizing his commitment to community involvement.
Timothy keeps an empty chair outside as a poignant tribute to his father. “I know he’s still there with me,” he said, highlighting the emotional significance behind the lights. The display not only brings joy to him but also to the neighbors who join in the festivities. “My neighbors are awesome and work well with me on the lights,” he stated, expressing gratitude for their support.
The lights are not just a personal project; they serve as a reminder of the joy and connections that the holiday season can bring. “We love the reactions and the special memories associated with people seeing our Christmas displays each year,” Timothy said, capturing the essence of the tradition.
As the holiday season approaches, Timothy Newsome’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope and continuity for his family and community. His dedication to honoring his father’s legacy through this stunning light display ensures that the spirit of Christmas lives on, bringing smiles and warmth to all who pass by.
