UPDATE: The Redondo Union boys basketball team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Democracy Prep from Las Vegas 87-61 at Harvard-Westlake’s Winter Showcase on November 10, 2023. The Sea Hawks, now 3-0 this season, showed resilience after a previous near-miss in last year’s CIF State playoffs.
The game began as a nail-biter, but after a critical timeout, Redondo Union unleashed a stunning 21-6 run that set the tone for the remainder of the match. Star player SJ Madison led the charge with 23 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks, showcasing his determination to avoid last season’s heartbreak.
“We started to pick it up in the second quarter, and things just went from there,” Madison stated. “We are trying to beat everyone. We don’t want to lose at all.”
Teammate Devin Wright added 17 points, while Chris Sanders contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Madison’s explosive start to the second half saw him score eight of the first twelve points, propelling the Sea Hawks’ lead to an impressive 31 points late in the third quarter.
Despite a late rally from Democracy Prep, which cut the deficit to 19 points, Redondo responded decisively. Madison scored a layup, and Wright scored eight consecutive points in the final minute of the third quarter, restoring a 29-point lead.
Head coach Reggie Morris emphasized the need for improvement despite the victory. “We didn’t get off to a good start in the first half. I told my guys they need to play with more urgency and get more aggressive on defense,” he remarked. “SJ stepped it up, but we still have room to grow.”
The Sea Hawks are keen to build on this momentum as they prepare for a challenging Bay League and the CIF-SS playoffs ahead. “These early games will get us ready for what we will face when we get to league and the playoffs,” Wright noted.
As Redondo Union continues their season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if they can maintain this aggressive mindset and capitalize on their potential.
Stay tuned for more updates on their journey as they aim for redemption this season.
