UPDATE: A stunning 17-foot balsam fir from Turck’s Trees in Litchfield, Minnesota, has just arrived at the State Capitol, ready to be transformed into this year’s Capitol Christmas tree. The delivery took place earlier this week, with decorations set to begin on Monday.
This moment marks a historic achievement for Turck’s Trees, which was selected after being crowned grand champion at the 2024 Minnesota State Fair. According to a news release, “It is a long-standing Minnesota tradition, but the first time for Turck’s Trees.”
The majestic tree was delivered to St. Paul on Tuesday, where it was expertly set up in the rotunda by Capitol staff. It will be on public display well past Christmas, inviting all to appreciate its beauty.
The balsam fir, known for its rich green needles, natural conical shape, and exceptional needle retention, is a favorite across North America. As noted by Turck’s Trees, it stands out as the most fragrant of all Christmas tree varieties.
Founded in 1875, Turck’s Trees has been a family-run operation since its inception. The Turck family planted their first Christmas trees in 1981 and has been selling them for over 35 years. The farm spans approximately 100 acres and is currently managed by Joan and Steve Turck, alongside their fourth, fifth, and sixth generations.
In an impressive feat, Turck’s Trees was chosen from more than 120 competing entries from Minnesota Christmas Tree Association members across the state, solidifying its reputation as a premier Christmas tree provider. Last year, they also provided trees to the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul, winning reserve grand champion at the Minnesota State Fair.
As the holiday season approaches, the delivery of this tree symbolizes not just a festive decoration but also a cherished Minnesota tradition. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to come and enjoy the beauty of the Capitol Christmas tree, which is set to become a centerpiece of celebration and joy in the heart of St. Paul.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Capitol Christmas tree as it gets dressed for the holidays!
