GE Appliances has announced a significant investment of $150 million to enhance its domestic sourcing initiatives. This move aligns with the company’s ongoing commitment to a “zero distance” supply chain strategy, which aims to improve efficiency and localize production.
Earlier this year, GE Appliances revealed plans to invest over $3 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations, building on the $3.5 billion already spent since 2016. This latest funding will support a $490 million project to expand laundry production at its facility in Louisville, Kentucky.
Strengthening Supplier Relationships
The investment not only focuses on expanding the supplier base but also emphasizes collaboration with suppliers from the early stages of product development. According to Ashley Eckert, a senior director of sourcing for GE Appliances, this proactive approach allows for better design and manufacturability. She stated, “Instead of waiting until designs are finalized, we’re involving them from the very beginning of development. That early collaboration helps us design for manufacturability, shorten lead times, improve competitiveness and ultimately deliver better products for our customers.”
This strategy reflects a significant shift in the way GE Appliances engages with its suppliers, ultimately aiming to streamline the production process and enhance product quality.
Investing in Automation and Technology
In addition to strengthening supplier relationships, GE Appliances is heavily investing in automation and advanced technologies to support its supply chain strategy. The company has already automated numerous processes involved in manufacturing appliances, including ovens and refrigerators. This automation enhances end-to-end visibility and accelerates material movement, as detailed by Bill Good, the Vice President of Supply Chain.
Good highlighted the importance of these technological advancements in achieving the goals set by the “zero distance” approach, which seeks to minimize the distance between design, manufacturing, and delivery.
