Utahns Can Use SNAP Balances After Nov. 1, Despite Cuts
In response to the ongoing federal government shutdown, Utah residents will still be able to utilize their existing SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) balances for purchases after November 1, 2023. The Utah Department of Workforce Services confirmed that individuals with a remaining balance from previous months can continue to use these funds despite the suspension of new SNAP benefits for November.
On November 1, SNAP payments will cease due to the effects of the government shutdown, which has now extended into its fourth week. State officials announced this decision on Wednesday, clarifying that while no new benefits will be issued, balances from prior months remain accessible. “If you have a balance in your SNAP account from a prior month, you will be able to make purchases with it after November 1,” the department stated in an update.
The Utah Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program will remain operational, thanks to contingency funding. This program provides nutritional support to women and children, ensuring that vulnerable populations can still receive necessary assistance during these challenging times.
As the impact of the government shutdown unfolds, more than 11,800 households across Utah, including Wasatch and Summit counties, are expected to face challenges due to the loss of SNAP benefits. Community Action Services and Food Bank (CASFB) is already preparing for an increase in demand for food assistance. The organization, which provides resources to those in need, is actively seeking donations and volunteers to help mitigate the potential rise in food insecurity.
CASFB has set an ambitious target of raising 70,000 pounds of food for its pantries and partner organizations by November 1. Community members are encouraged to contribute through their website to help ensure that no one goes hungry as the situation escalates.
As the shutdown continues, various organizations are mobilizing to address the heightened needs of the community. The announcement regarding SNAP payments underscores the broader implications of the government shutdown, affecting not only food assistance programs but also the well-being of countless families across the state. The situation remains fluid, and local agencies are committed to supporting those impacted during this challenging period.
