Wells Regional Transportation Center Expands with New Platform

The Wells Regional Transportation Center has enhanced its facilities with a new passenger platform as part of a significant expansion project. This initiative includes the installation of structural steel for a pedestrian bridge and elevator towers, aiming to improve accessibility and services at the station.

Expansion Details and Future Plans

The expansion, known as the Wells Area Improvement Project, encompasses three major components: a six-mile extension of existing passing siding tracks, the addition of a second passenger platform, and the construction of a pedestrian bridge. Initiated in 2021, the six-mile siding track expansion is scheduled for completion in December 2024.

Michael Pardue, the town manager of Wells, expressed enthusiasm about the project. He emphasized its benefits for both local residents and visitors, stating, “What we’re looking for is to give people the opportunity to use the train to travel to and from work, but this will also have a great impact on people coming to the Wells area as visitors for more tourism opportunities.” He referred to the initiative as a “wonderful opportunity” for the region.

To further enhance visitor services, discussions are underway with the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority regarding the potential introduction of a van or shuttle service from the station. Pardue described this concept as “closing the last mile,” aiming to facilitate easier access for passengers once they arrive.

Funding for the project comes from various sources, including the Federal Railroad Administration, the Maine Department of Transportation, and CSX Transportation. The construction work is being carried out by Great Falls Construction, based in Gorham.

Impact on Regional Transportation

Dean Williams, director of the transportation division at the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission, highlighted the importance of the second platform in enhancing the station’s connectivity. He noted that improving connections for regional transportation in Wells was identified as a regional priority prior to the project’s approval.

The comprehensive plan published by the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority aims to facilitate a sixth daily Amtrak Downeaster round-trip route between Wells and Brunswick, thereby enhancing train reliability and schedule flexibility. The addition of the second passenger platform will allow for simultaneous departures of northbound and southbound trains, significantly improving operational efficiency.

Patricia Quinn, the executive director of the rail authority, remarked on the project’s transformative potential. “Seeing the vision come to life on site serves as an incredible reminder of the impact this project will have on passengers and communities along the Downeaster corridor,” she stated in a press release.

The entire Wells Area Improvement Project is expected to reach completion by late fall 2026, marking a significant development in the region’s transportation infrastructure.
