Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson Star in ‘Song Sung Blue’ Biopic

The upcoming biopic “Song Sung Blue,” featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, tells the poignant story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a Milwaukee couple who found success performing a tribute act to legendary singer Neil Diamond. Directed by Craig Brewer, the film will be released in theaters on December 2, 2023, and explores the couple’s journey through the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives.

The film chronicles how their band, Lightning & Thunder, became a beloved regional act from the 1980s to the early 2000s. It delves into the challenges they faced, including financial hardships and significant health issues, notably a tragic accident in 1999 that led to Claire losing her foot. It also addresses the devastating impact of Mike’s untimely death in 2006 at the age of 55 due to a head injury.

Who Were Mike and Claire Sardina?

Mike and Claire Sardina were prominent figures in Milwaukee’s music scene, performing as part of the tribute act Lightning & Thunder. Mike, known for his portrayal of Neil Diamond, embraced the stage with long sideburns and striking costumes, while Claire took on the role of “Thunder,” playing keyboard and providing vocals. Their partnership extended beyond music; they were married for twelve years and raised four children together.

Before embarking on his musical journey, Mike Sardina served in the U.S. Marines, where he formed a rock band during his service in Vietnam. His life was marked by a struggle with addiction, which he overcame in 1980. Claire, who began singing in childhood, honed her skills through formal lessons as an adult. Their story was previously depicted in the 2008 documentary titled “Song Sung Blue,” directed by Greg Kohs.

The Formation of Lightning & Thunder

The inception of Lightning & Thunder occurred in 1987, when Mike approached Claire Stingl, who was then performing in a tribute act for Patsy Cline. Their initial meeting, intended to be purely professional, quickly blossomed into romance, culminating in their wedding during a performance at the 1994 State Fair. Their act gained traction, earning a dedicated following at local festivals and events across Wisconsin and Illinois.

Lightning & Thunder’s reputation grew, attracting the attention of notable touring bands such as Pearl Jam, Garbage, and Urge Overkill, who invited the duo to perform alongside them.

Tragedy and Resilience

The couple faced a life-altering event in 1999 when Claire was struck by a car while gardening, resulting in the amputation of her left leg below the knee. The incident plunged her into a deep depression, leading her to consider divorce. Yet, their bond proved stronger than adversity. “We just couldn’t bear to be without each other,” Claire later reflected. They reunited, returning to their musical roots together, with Claire asserting, “I didn’t lose my voice. I only lost a leg. But I can still perform, still have the passion and can still sing.”

The couple’s resilience was further tested when Mike tragically died in July 2006 after suffering a fall at home. Claire recalled that he had performed at a baseball game just hours before his death, singing “Sweet Caroline” during the event. Following the incident, he experienced severe symptoms and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced brain dead. Claire expressed profound grief over his loss, stating, “The time we spent together — 17 years — it wasn’t enough for me.”

“Song Sung Blue” promises to be an emotional tribute not only to the Sardinas’ musical legacy but also to their enduring love and resilience in the face of life’s challenges. The film captures the essence of a couple who turned their struggles into art, highlighting their personal triumphs and tragedies.
