Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet Celebrates Vince Guaraldi’s Holiday Music

The Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet is set to present “A Guaraldi Holiday” at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, Colorado, on December 22, 2023. In partnership with Vail Jazz, this event features two performances dedicated to the beloved jazz compositions of Vince Guaraldi, renowned for his work on the “Peanuts” television specials.

Leading the quartet is acclaimed pianist and composer Isaiah J. Thompson, who will be joined by tenor saxophonist Julian Lee, drummer Matthew Lee, and upright bassist Sebastian Rios. This concert marks Thompson’s return to Vail, where he first honed his skills at the 2014 Vail Jazz Workshop. Anneliese Swift, the executive director of Vail Jazz, highlighted how the workshop shaped Thompson’s musicianship and confidence. Since then, he has emerged as a prominent figure in contemporary jazz, known for his expressive playing and innovative compositions.

Thompson’s latest project pays homage to Guaraldi’s music, blending nostalgia with modern jazz sensibilities. “A lot of people say they don’t like jazz, but they love Charlie Brown — they love Vince Guaraldi,” Thompson remarked. He encourages audiences to reconsider their perceptions of jazz, suggesting that many were first introduced to the genre through the enchanting music accompanying the “Peanuts” specials. His recent album, also titled “A Guaraldi Holiday,” showcases his dedication to reinterpreting these cherished pieces.

The performances promise to evoke the spirit of the holidays while presenting Guaraldi’s classics through the quartet’s unique lens. Thompson expressed his excitement for playing Guaraldi’s music, stating, “It’s just super special around this time of year.” He emphasized the importance of the collaborative spirit among the musicians, who have a long-standing connection from their time at Juilliard.

Thompson described the essence of modern jazz as an active participation in the music-making process. “Improvisation makes it very active — makes you an active participant,” he explained. The quartet aims to honor the original spirit of Guaraldi’s work, even as they introduce new arrangements that reflect their contemporary approach.

As the holiday season approaches, the Vilar Performing Arts Center stands as a beacon for jazz appreciation, a genre Thompson believes deserves greater recognition within mainstream culture. “When you’re in an environment like Vail, you feel the music is treasured,” he stated.

Tickets for the performances are priced at $84.75 for general admission, which is already sold out, and $133 for reserved seating, also sold out. The concert is part of the Pick 3/5 Ticket Package offered by the venue.

For those looking to experience a delightful blend of nostalgia and contemporary jazz, “A Guaraldi Holiday” promises to be a memorable celebration. More information can be found at VilarPAC.org.
