Jack Black Reveals Cut SNL Sketch Written by Amy Poehler

Jack Black recently shared details about an unaired sketch from Saturday Night Live called “Boys Night Out,” which was penned by fellow comedian Amy Poehler. During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Black elaborated on the sketch’s concept and its unfortunate fate after dress rehearsal.

The actor, known for his energetic performances, described the sketch as specifically tailored for him. He expressed his intention to perform it as a short musical piece. Black delighted the audience by singing the catchy hook: “‘Boys night out / Boys night out / Now we’re really rockin’ / And the chicks are all a-squawkin’ / ‘Cause we’re talking ‘bout a boys night out!’”

The premise revolved around a man excited for a night out with friends, particularly because his wife was away for the day. While the audience at Meyers’ studio responded positively to Black’s performance, the sketch did not resonate in the dress rehearsal for SNL.

Black candidly reflected on the experience, stating, “I thought it was funny, but then, in the dress, it really took a dump-ski. And it was like… It’s out.” He acknowledged he supported the decision made by SNL creator Lorne Michaels to cut the sketch.

Meyers commended Black for his dedication, noting that the actor’s efforts to promote the piece despite its rejection were particularly impressive. Black humorously responded, “I’ve only got one gear! As anyone who knows me knows, I go all the way.”

Poehler has also discussed the sketch on her podcast, Good Hang. She revealed that she and Emily Spivey co-wrote “Boys Night Out,” depicting a scenario where Black’s character eagerly awaits friends who never arrive, leading him to repeatedly order wings as he waits.

While the sketch’s failure to air may have disappointed Black, his enthusiasm and commitment to the material reflect the passion he brings to his craft. The story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of live television and the creative process behind comedy.
