MSU’s Performance Series Brings Diverse Musical Talent to Mankato

The annual music performance series at Minnesota State University (MSU) in Mankato showcases a diverse lineup of artists, drawing attention from music enthusiasts across the region. Curated by Dale Haefner, the series will feature a variety of performances from January through April 2024, highlighting both local and national talent.

On January 27, the series kicks off with the duo of Jennifer Grimm and Joe Cruz, who will perform songs inspired by legendary collaborations, including those of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, as well as Tuck & Patti. Haefner describes the performance as an exciting blend of Grimm’s “charisma, versatility, and pitch-perfect singing” with Cruz’s “genre-bending Latin-infused pyrotechnic guitar style.”

The following performance on February 8 will feature MSU musicians David Viscoli, Daniel Rieppel, Matthew McClung, and Erick Rieppel. This concert will present classical works by composers such as Bela Bartok, Samuel Robles, and Cesar Bresgen. Viscoli and Rieppel have performed internationally, while McClung serves as the timpanist for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Erick Rieppel holds a similar position with the Minnesota Orchestra.

On February 11, the series expands beyond the recital hall with a performance by Martin Zellar and the Hardways at The Venue on Madison Avenue. Zellar, known for his work with The Gear Daddies in the 1980s, continues to engage audiences through songwriting and live performances.

Following on February 19, beloved local artist Mary Jane Alm returns to MSU, accompanied by Richard Kriehn, Brian C. Peters, and Haefner himself. Alm’s acclaimed vocal talent and engaging stage presence have earned her induction into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame.

The series will also feature a high-energy performance by Electric Diva on February 21, led by North Mankato’s Mollie Fischer. This event promises a nostalgic night filled with popular songs that invite audience participation. The Luke LeBlanc Band will take the stage on the same day, offering original music that melds folk and pop, described by The Current as “delicate, understated, and careful in its construction.”

March will see the return of the Erik Koskinen Band on March 21, presenting a blend of folk, blues, and roots-rock. Koskinen is known for his warm baritone vocals and storytelling ability. Following this, John McAndrew will perform on March 26, bringing themes of transformation and recovery through his music, as he utilizes music therapy in his work at Cumberland Heights, a treatment center in Nashville.

The series continues with Sarah Morris & The Sometimes Guys on March 30, whose songwriting has garnered recognition in prestigious competitions. On April 11, Dessa & Friends will perform at The Venue, featuring a combination of new and original music alongside her frequent collaborators.

The series will conclude on April 21 with a performance by Cruzando, which will celebrate Latin music genres including Cuban Son, Puerto Rican bomba, salsa, and boleros.

In addition to these performances, the Department of Performing Arts at MSU will host a range of student ensemble concerts, featuring the Concert Choir, University Chorale, Concert Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Mavericks Big Band, among others.
