New Rhythm Arcade The Dragon’s Dojo Opens in Burlington

A new arcade dedicated to rhythm games has opened its doors in Burlington, Vermont, aiming to provide a unique social space for residents. The Dragon’s Dojo opened in late October 2023 beneath scaffolding on College Street, offering an alternative venue where locals can gather outside of traditional settings like bars and gyms.

Owner Jaret Williams, 28, launched the arcade after receiving an inheritance, inspired by inclusivity and community-building experiences from their time at Game Underground in Waltham, Massachusetts. Williams, who graduated from the University of Vermont in 2021, has a vision for The Dragon’s Dojo as a welcoming environment, particularly for marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ population. “I don’t think there was a single cisgendered person in the room,” Williams recalled about a previous experience at Game Underground, emphasizing the importance of creating a space where everyone can feel at home.

A Unique Gaming Experience

The Dragon’s Dojo specializes in rhythm games, a genre that combines the energetic atmosphere of social gatherings with the physical benefits of active gaming. According to Guinness World Records, the first recorded rhythm game was Family Trainer: Aerobics Studio, released in Japan in 1987. While many people might recognize titles like Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution, Williams insists there is a wealth of less known yet equally engaging rhythm games waiting to be discovered.

The arcade’s standout game is Wacca, which features a circular neon layout and a 360-degree touch screen. Williams noted the game’s popularity stems from its “intuitiveness,” making it accessible for both newcomers and seasoned players. “It’s something about Wacca’s intuitiveness,” Williams said, highlighting its appeal to a diverse audience.

The market for arcades in Vermont is limited, with only 13 businesses operating in the Arcade, Food & Entertainment Complexes Industry, according to an analysis by IBISWorld. None of these establishments focus exclusively on rhythm games, positioning The Dragon’s Dojo as a unique destination for enthusiasts in the region. “There’s nowhere else to play most of these games for hundreds of miles,” Williams remarked, underscoring the arcade’s role in fostering community connections.

Building Community Connections

The Dragon’s Dojo not only serves as a gaming venue but also as a space for social interaction among people with shared interests. Customers like Sophie Carbin have found a welcoming environment that is not centered around alcohol consumption. Carbin, who discovered the arcade through friends in the gaming and queer communities, expressed appreciation for the inclusive atmosphere. “I think it’s nice that it also brings together people of shared interests,” Carbin noted. “People are here for the games and not just kind of as a night out with friends.”

Williams envisions The Dragon’s Dojo as a place where gamers can meet face-to-face, breaking away from the isolation often experienced in online gaming. “It’s neat to have more options for people, rather than like, ‘You like games? Stay at home.’ No, there’s options,” they said.

With its focus on rhythm games and community engagement, The Dragon’s Dojo aims to redefine the gaming experience in Burlington. This new arcade not only provides entertainment but also creates a space where individuals can connect, enjoy physical activity, and build friendships, marking a significant addition to the local scene.
