Beloved Californian Carolyn Hacker Passes Away at 87

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a cherished resident of San Rafael, California, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her life was marked by a deep connection to her family, community, and a passion for gardening, which left a lasting impression on those who knew her.

Early Life and Education

Born in San Francisco in 1938, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field. She was also the eldest granddaughter of Ward and Kate Mailliard. Growing up in a family with significant roots in the Bay Area, including areas such as San Geronimo, Cotati, and Yorkville, these locations remained meaningful throughout her life. During her early childhood, Carolyn traveled with her family as her father served in the United States Army.

Following the end of World War II, the family returned to San Francisco, where Carolyn attended KD Burke School and Katherine Branson Girls School. She later pursued her studies at Connecticut College for Women. In 1963, Carolyn established her home in San Rafael, where she lived for over six decades.

Community Engagement and Passions

Carolyn was known for her passion for gardening, cultivating a variety of plants that earned her numerous awards at the Marin County Fair. Beyond her green thumb, she enjoyed knitting and devoted significant time to genealogy, meticulously researching her family’s history for future generations.

Her commitment to community service was evident through her active involvement in the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District from 1972 to 1980. Carolyn’s dedication to education and service reflected her strong belief in giving back to the community she cherished.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, Paul Hacker, her children, Barbara (Greg) and Lyn (Don), her grandchildren, Andrew (Katy), Chris, Emily (Mike), Amanda, and KevinJocelyn. She also leaves behind her sisters, Kathy and Margot, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In celebration of her life and contributions, a memorial event will be held in May 2026, coinciding with Carolyn’s birthday and Mother’s Day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society, reflecting Carolyn’s commitment to community enrichment.
