Chiefs Game Highlights Community Engagement and Holiday Giving
A recent trip to Kansas City provided not only thrilling moments at a Chiefs game but also highlighted community involvement through health initiatives and volunteer opportunities. The week began with vaccinations at a local Walgreens, where pharmacy technician Daniella administered Covid-19 and flu shots, while pharmacist De’Marcus provided the RSV vaccine.
Inquiries about a tetanus shot for Ernest revealed that his last vaccination was in July 2020, sparing him from a repeat. In contrast, the writer required a tetanus booster, as their last shot was in 2014, and both individuals discussed the need for pneumonia vaccinations.
Following their health appointments, the couple participated in absentee voting on local amendments, encountering Charda Bronaugh and Dee Bennett at the polling place. Richard Martinez, the elections judge, along with workers Kimberly Thomas, Rhonda Doss, and Betty Dufner, facilitated the voting process, with the couple being the 128th and 129th voters on the second day.
The week continued with a visit to LabCorp for routine tests, where a blood draw was performed with assistance from Cynthia and Rhonda, who celebrated 15 years with the organization. A follow-up appointment with Dr. Sean Moran for a yearly checkup included a standard cognitive test that posed a challenge when asked to spell “World” backwards, a task made easier with the help of RN Karen Jones.
Excitement peaked during the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Raiders, where local residents Mandy Milam Harris, Josiah Harris, Shelby Harris, and Linda Malnar joined enthusiastic fans. They occupied prime seating close to the action, with Shelby capturing a moment at the entrance to Taylor Swift‘s suite. The atmosphere was electric, filled with cheers and “Chiefs battle calls.”
As the game progressed, Coach Andy Reid substituted the starters in the fourth quarter. Despite efforts to catch the attention of star player Travis Kelce, the fans left without a wave from him. After an exhilarating experience, the group drove back to Bullard, anticipating an arrival time of 00:45. This marks Mandy‘s third trip to see the Chiefs play, showcasing her dedication as a die-hard fan.
Amid the excitement of the game, community service remains a priority. The East Texas Food Bank is seeking 50 to 75 volunteers for its Holiday Food Box Distribution event in Lufkin, Texas. Scheduled for December 1 from 09:00 to 14:00 at the Angelina County Expo Center, the event aims to support local families during the festive season.
Volunteer shifts are available for various roles, including Traffic Controllers and Loading Assistants, with some positions requiring a minimum age of 17 or 18. Those interested in serving their community are encouraged to contact Susie at (936) 676-6654 or Josh at (936) 240-6378 to secure their spot.
As the community rallies for both health and service, the week serves as a reminder of the importance of collective engagement in health and charitable efforts.
