Chris McKenna Shares Journey with Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis

Actor Chris McKenna, known for his role on the popular soap opera General Hospital, publicly revealed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder during an interview on the “State of Mind with Maurice Benard” podcast on December 15, 2023. McKenna, 48, discussed the challenges he faced, including a mental health breakdown during the Covid-19 pandemic that ultimately led to his diagnosis.

“I have bipolar disorder… This is the first time I’m ever talking about it publicly,” McKenna shared, emphasizing a journey marked by struggles with mental health and substance abuse. He acknowledged that his condition has significantly affected his life, stating, “I’m doing good right now. Hasn’t always been the case, but I’m good right now.”

Challenges and Revelations

During the conversation, McKenna elaborated on his long-standing battle with bipolar disorder, admitting that he lived undiagnosed for many years. He recalled having his first breakdown as a teenager, explaining how he managed his life without proper treatment until the pandemic exacerbated his condition. “I experienced heavy psychothermia, which is talked about… culminating in Covid, when I had my first dangerous depression since a teenager,” said McKenna. This period was marked by a manic psychotic episode that required hospitalization, where he finally received his diagnosis.

Following his diagnosis, McKenna began treatment with medication, specifically lithium, which he credits for his current stability. He articulated the importance of understanding that each individual’s experience with bipolar disorder varies, stating, “Our journey is different, and my symptoms are different than yours.”

The Mayo Clinic describes bipolar disorder as a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings, including episodes of mania and depression. It notes that symptoms can differ significantly among individuals and may fluctuate over time. The disorder typically begins in the teenage years or early twenties, highlighting the need for awareness and early intervention.

Reflections on a Career in Acting

In addition to discussing his mental health, McKenna reflected on his early career as a child actor, starting at age 7. He recounted landing a role on the soap opera One Life to Live at just 12 years old and the pressures that came with it. “They were trying to do adult storylines with me. I was 6’3” playing 18, but I was only 15,” he remarked, sharing the complexities of growing up in the public eye.

McKenna’s candidness mirrors that of his fellow actor, Maurice Benard, who publicly shared his own bipolar diagnosis in 2000. Benard, who has also faced significant challenges, detailed in an interview with People how stigma in the acting community delayed his openness. “I didn’t talk about it because an acting coach told me that if I said I was bipolar or mentally ill, I wouldn’t get cast,” Benard explained. His memoir, Nothing General About It, captures his experiences, including struggles with anxiety and manic episodes.

Both actors highlight the importance of addressing mental health issues, especially within the entertainment industry, where stigma often prevails. Their stories provide valuable insight and encouragement for others facing similar battles.
