Gritman Medical Center has successfully completed significant upgrades to its surgical department, enhancing its capabilities in Moscow. After an 18-month project, the hospital has relocated its Sterile Processing Department to the third floor of the “1960s wing.” This facility is crucial for the decontamination and sanitization of all surgical equipment used in procedures at the center.
To support the new Sterile Processing Department, Gritman constructed a dedicated electrical room outside the building. These upgrades are part of a broader initiative aimed at expanding the hospital’s surgical services to accommodate the growing needs of the community. In 2024, Gritman reported nearly 3,000 surgeries performed, underscoring the increasing demand for surgical care.
Investment in Technology and Facilities
In addition to the facility upgrades, Gritman Medical Center has invested in advanced surgical technology, including the acquisition of surgical robots in both 2022 and 2023. The hospital is also actively recruiting new providers in key specializations such as general surgery, gastroenterology, and orthopedics to further enhance its service offerings.
Another significant development is Gritman’s complete ownership of the Palouse Surgery Center located on A Street in Moscow. Previously, Gritman held a 60% stake in the ambulatory surgery center. This acquisition allows the hospital to optimize the use of the Palouse Surgery Center, ensuring that it meets patient demand effectively and balances surgeon schedules across the Gritman system.
Funding and Community Impact
The funding for these upgrades has come from Gritman’s operating revenue and tax-exempt revenue bonds, reaffirming the hospital’s status as a private, nonprofit community facility that does not rely on local tax funding. The improvements reflect Gritman’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services and addressing the needs of its growing patient population.
As Gritman Medical Center continues to evolve, its focus remains on enhancing patient care and surgical capabilities, ensuring that it can meet the healthcare demands of the community effectively in the years to come.
