Loneliness UK Uses TikTok to Combat Isolation and Health Anxiety

Loneliness UK, founded by Burnley resident Michael Helps, is leveraging the social media platform TikTok to raise awareness about health anxiety and social isolation. Initially launched as a letter-writing initiative aimed at connecting the elderly with the wider community, the organization is adapting to modern communication trends to reach a broader audience.

Three years into its mission, Helps remains committed to fighting loneliness across all age groups. He reflects on the challenges faced along the way, stating, “My journey with Loneliness UK has been challenging with many ups and downs, but I still strive to make Loneliness UK a household name to support those in times of need.” The organization encourages individuals experiencing loneliness to reach out by writing letters, either online or via traditional mail. “No one should ever feel alone. We are here to support and listen,” he adds.

In recent months, Helps has embraced TikTok as a creative outlet to share his experiences with loneliness and loss. One of his videos has garnered over 24,000 views and sparked 133 comments from viewers across the UK. These heartfelt interactions have inspired him to continue using the platform to discuss various topics, from coping with bereavement to managing health anxiety. “When traveling across the UK, I have made a commitment to upload videos sharing different topics in the hope of reaching those who need someone to talk to and listen,” he explains.

Despite the growth of the initiative, Helps finances the operations of Loneliness UK from his own resources. To ensure the sustainability of the free service, he has recently launched a GoFundMe page. “Loneliness UK will never become a service that people who are suffering with loneliness will have to pay for,” he assures.

The issue of loneliness is increasingly recognized as a significant global public health concern, comparable to threats like obesity and smoking. It has profound negative impacts on both physical and mental health, particularly among younger populations. Loneliness UK aims to be accessible to all ages, emphasizing that all that is needed to participate is “a pen, paper, envelope, and stamp.”
