The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with local fire departments and law enforcement agencies, has successfully raised over $8,000 for breast cancer initiatives through the Pink Patch Project. This annual campaign, held throughout October, aims to enhance breast cancer awareness and support related research and services within the community.
Throughout the month, personnel from various departments, including the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and the Grass Valley Police Department, wore distinctive pink patches on their uniforms. Additionally, they sold themed merchandise such as pink patches, challenge coins, and apparel, with all proceeds allocated to benefit local health foundations. According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office’s official post, a total of $8,439 was collected, primarily directed to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation (SNMHF), while a portion will assist the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation (TFHSF).
Community Engagement and Events
The Pink Patch Project extended beyond fundraising, featuring several community events designed to raise awareness for breast cancer. Highlights included the Pink Patch Pickleball Tournament, Heroes Night at Nevada Union High School, and various local Halloween activities. A significant event was the charity drawing for a Pink Patch shadow box, which included challenge coins from the past five years and patches from all seven participating agencies. This year’s winner was Kelli McDaniel, as announced in an official Facebook post.
On October 25, 2023, Sheriff Shannan Moon presented a symbolic check to the SNMHF and expressed gratitude to the hospital staff for their ongoing support. The initiative not only raised funds but also fostered a sense of community among law enforcement families and residents of Nevada County.
Future Plans and Contributions
Looking ahead, the sheriff’s office plans to host the next breast cancer challenge coin contest in late spring 2026, with activities associated with the Pink Patch Project expected to resume in October. The sheriff’s office urged community members interested in contributing to consider direct donations to the TFHSF and SNMHF.
The success of this year’s Pink Patch Project underscores the commitment of local law enforcement and community organizations to fight breast cancer, providing essential support to those affected and promoting health awareness across Nevada County.
