Nut Company Recalls Pecans Over Undeclared Cashew Allergens

A significant health risk has prompted a recall of pecans by Nat’s Nuts, a company based in Rochester, New York. The recall affects approximately 600 bags of their Cinnamon Whiskey Pecans, which may inadvertently contain undeclared cashews. This poses a serious threat to individuals with allergies or severe sensitivities to cashews, potentially leading to life-threatening allergic reactions.
The affected product was distributed between October 8 and October 16, 2023, to 25 retail stores across several states, including Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Ohio, Nevada, Florida, and Wisconsin. Additionally, the nuts were available for purchase on Amazon from October 9 to October 16. The packaging includes a 4-ounce black and orange bag, marked with UPC 860002146720, lot code 1.22, and a best-by date of September 29, 2026.
Investigation and Consumer Safety Measures
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the recall was initiated after a retailer discovered cashews mixed in with the pecans during a sampling process. In response, Nat’s Nuts stated that the issue arose due to a temporary breakdown in their production and packaging processes.
To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled product. The FDA emphasizes the importance of consumer awareness, particularly for those who may be at risk due to nut allergies. Individuals who have purchased the Cinnamon Whiskey Pecans are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Nat’s Nuts is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its products and has instructed retailers to remove the affected items from their shelves. For additional information or inquiries, customers can contact the company at 585-310-0157 during business hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This incident highlights the critical nature of ingredient transparency and the need for vigilance regarding food allergies. As the recall unfolds, consumers are urged to stay informed and cautious when purchasing nut products.
