Over 30,000 Join Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Tampa
More than 30,000 participants gathered outside Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on October 21, 2023, for the American Cancer Society‘s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. This popular fundraising event brought together cancer survivors, supporters, and individuals known as “pre-vivors,” who are at risk due to family history of the disease.
The event featured a loop walk around the stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, alongside a vibrant atmosphere filled with live music and numerous local vendors showcasing their products. Participants engaged in a community spirit aimed at raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment.
Susan Fernandez, a member of the organizing committee, highlighted the importance of community support, stating, “As much of a shock as it is, the American Cancer Society is there to help you all the way through.” Her remarks underscored the collective journey many attendees experience, reflecting both personal battles and shared resilience.
All proceeds from the event were directed towards cancer treatments and research initiatives. The fundraising goal for this year’s event was set at just over $1 million, reflecting a commitment to advancing efforts in the fight against breast cancer.
Participants were not only united by their cause but also by the shared hope of a future where fewer families are impacted by cancer. The Making Strides event serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by the disease, while also celebrating the strength and determination of those affected.
Overall, the successful turnout at Raymond James Stadium demonstrated the power of community in tackling cancer-related issues. As the American Cancer Society continues its mission, events like these play a crucial role in fostering awareness and support for those in need.
