The Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is organizing a “Heart and Kidney Lunch and Learn” aimed at enhancing community awareness about heart and kidney health. Scheduled for February 28, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event will take place at the Vaughan Regional Medical Towers Classroom. It is free to the public and focuses on the theme “The Power to Prevent: Heart & Kidney Health in Our Hands.”
By exploring the crucial relationship between the heart and kidneys, this initiative intends to equip local residents with vital information on identifying risk factors and accessing necessary medical care. The heart and kidneys collaborate to maintain overall health; while the heart circulates oxygen-rich blood, the kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and excess fluid. This interdependence means that issues affecting one organ often impact the other.
The connection between heart disease and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is particularly urgent. Both conditions share significant risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and family history. According to health data, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for approximately one in every five deaths. Alarmingly, African Americans, who represent only 13% of the U.S. population, account for 35% of adults diagnosed with CKD, a disease that often develops without noticeable symptoms until it reaches advanced stages.
Expert Insights and Community Support
Attendees will benefit from insights provided by a panel of esteemed professionals, including cardiologist Dr. Steve Allyn, family physician Dr. Andreia White, and special guest Ms. Dyphelia Thrash. Dr. Patricia Robinson, President of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, emphasized the importance of providing essential education and preventive resources to the community.
The program is structured to illustrate how early detection and simple lifestyle modifications—such as effective blood pressure management, regular physical activity, and nutritious eating—can significantly lower the risk of both heart and kidney diseases.
Participants are encouraged to wear red to demonstrate their commitment to heart health awareness. The event will also feature a complimentary lunch and door prizes, creating an inviting atmosphere for attendees.
Community Collaboration and Registration
This initiative is made possible through the sponsorship of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, with additional support from Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and the Black K.A.R.E. program, which is funded by Vantive.
