Bob Falls Takes Charge of ‘Amadeus’ at Steppenwolf Theatre

Renowned director Bob Falls, formerly of Goodman Theatre, is now leading a critically acclaimed production of “Amadeus” at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. This transition marks a significant chapter in Falls’ illustrious career as he continues to resonate with audiences through powerful storytelling.

From Roots to Recognition

Falls, an Illinois native, has enjoyed a distinguished career in theatre, spending decades as the artistic director at Goodman Theatre. Reflecting on his humble beginnings, he shared, “I grew up in this farming community, 900 people downstate Illinois, a town called Ashland.” He later moved to the Villa Park and Lombard area, where he developed his passion for performing arts. “I’ve just always been a kid who wanted to tell stories,” Falls noted, illustrating his lifelong dedication to theater.

His current role at Steppenwolf has further solidified his reputation. “Amadeus,” a play centered on themes of envy and jealousy, explores the life of the celebrated composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Falls describes the conflict between a leading composer and the young virtuoso who disrupts his world. “It’s about one man who is the leading composer of his day. And suddenly, this young kid comes into town, Mozart, and it rocks his life,” Falls explained. This exploration of genius and artistic rivalry continues to resonate with audiences today.

Thematic Relevance and Audience Connection

In the age of social media, Falls connects the play’s themes to modern life, saying, “We’ve fallen into a world of envy because of that little device we carry around in our hands.” He highlights how platforms like Facebook and Twitter create a curated reality, often leading individuals to compare their lives unfavorably against others. This commentary adds depth to the production, making it more relevant in today’s context.

Falls also reminisced about his time at Goodman Theatre, where he collaborated with many talented ensemble members. “Steppenwolf and the Goodman have always been the two leading theater companies, without a doubt in the city,” he stated. His experience in both venues fosters an intimate atmosphere during performances, enhancing the audience’s connection to the storytelling.

One of Falls’ favorite aspects of directing is witnessing the transformative power of theater. “The great thing about theater at its best is it can be thoughtful,” he said. He expressed joy in seeing young people discovering the world of theater for the first time and how it can change their lives. “It’s their introduction to a new world and there’s nothing more pleasurable than that,” Falls added.

Due to popular demand, the production of “Amadeus” has been extended and will run through January 25, 2024, allowing more audiences to experience this thought-provoking play under Falls’ expert direction. His commitment to storytelling and ability to evoke emotional responses ensures that “Amadeus” will continue to captivate viewers at Steppenwolf Theatre.
