Bridgeport Elks Lodge 714 Marks 125 Years of Community Service

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Bridgeport Lodge 714 is set to celebrate its 125th anniversary on March 28, 2026. Originally chartered in 1901 as the Norristown Elks, the lodge has a rich history in the community and has adapted over the years to serve its members and the public.

Initially located at the intersection of Main and Swede Streets in Norristown, the lodge moved to a new building at 222 Haws Avenue just a few years later. At its peak, Lodge 714 boasted a membership of 2,000 and supported a concert band. In the mid-1990s, the Elks relocated to Bridgeport, where its membership now exceeds 400.

Legacy and Community Impact

The Elks organization is one of the largest fraternal organizations in the United States, with over 1,900 lodges and nearly 800,000 members nationwide. Throughout its history, the Elks have included notable figures such as U.S. Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and George H. Bush, along with entertainers like Clint Eastwood and sports legends such as Eli Manning.

During both World Wars, the Elks contributed significantly, with approximately 70,000 members serving in World War I and 100,000 in World War II. Tragically, 1,000 and 1,600 members, respectively, made the ultimate sacrifice.

The mission of the Elks is grounded in the principles of charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity, emphasizing a belief in God and American patriotism. Their motto, “Elks Care, Elks Share,” reflects their commitment to community service through initiatives such as food drives, scholarships, drug awareness programs, and support for veterans. National events like the Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot also engage children and promote healthy competition.

Upcoming Celebrations and Future Leadership

The milestone anniversary celebration will take place at the Alloy in King of Prussia, where members and guests will gather to honor the lodge’s history and contributions to the community. Troy Schantz currently serves as the Exalted Ruler of Lodge 714, with Dan Simons set to assume this role in April.

For those interested in learning more about the Elks or becoming a member, Lodge 714 maintains an active presence on social media. Joining one lodge allows access to any lodge across the country, fostering a sense of belonging within this extensive network.

As the Bridgeport Elks Lodge 714 prepares for its anniversary, the organization reflects on its achievements and looks forward to continuing its mission of service and community support for many years to come.
