Community Unites to Gift New Truck to Beloved Local Driver

A community in South Bend, Indiana, has rallied together to provide Marcellus “Mo” Riles with a brand-new truck after his old, battered pickup went viral online. The outpouring of support culminated in the reveal of a 2019 Chevy Silverado, which was made possible through the generosity of over 500 donors who contributed more than $22,000 via a GoFundMe campaign initiated by local business owner Colin Crowel.

The campaign launched on November 30, 2025, after Crowel, the owner of Carguys Auto Detailing, was moved by images and videos of Riles’ struggling vehicle. Crowel’s intention was clear: to help Riles transition to a safer and more reliable mode of transportation, especially considering Riles’ ongoing health challenges.

Community Support and Generosity Shine Through

The fundraising effort gained momentum quickly, with contributions pouring in from individuals across the community. The culmination of this initiative took place at Gates Chevrolet in South Bend, where Riles was presented with the keys to his new vehicle. His reaction was heartfelt; “God blessed me,” he expressed as he embraced the moment, visibly moved by the community’s kindness.

For Crowel, this event marked a pinnacle in his career. “I’ve got to do a lot of amazing things,” he said. “I think this is the top moment.” His commitment to supporting Riles extended beyond just the truck purchase. He emphasized the importance of ensuring Riles has a dependable vehicle to attend medical appointments, work, and run daily errands without the worry of transportation issues.

Looking to the Future

In addition to the truck, local auto shops have stepped up, offering to assist with Riles’ future vehicle maintenance. This collaboration underscores a broader commitment within the community to provide ongoing support for Riles, ensuring that he remains mobile and secure.

Riles, reflecting on the experience, expressed deep gratitude for the collective efforts that made this possible. “I’m so appreciative of this community,” he stated. “It’s not about me — it’s about the efforts of a man who saw a stressful situation for another human being.”

This initiative serves as a powerful reminder of how communities can come together to make a significant difference in individual lives, transforming what began as a viral moment into a lasting impact. The successful campaign not only provided Riles with a new truck but also reinforced the bonds of support and compassion among local residents.
