Authorities continue their search for Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing since January 31, 2024. Investigators believe she may have been kidnapped, as drops of her blood were discovered on the front porch of her home in Tucson, Arizona. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is actively pursuing leads and has refocused resources specifically on this case.
Potential DNA Breakthroughs
In a recent interview with NewsNation’s Brian Entin, April Stonehouse, a forensics professor at Arizona State University and former DNA analyst, discussed the potential role of DNA evidence in identifying the suspect. Stonehouse expressed optimism that investigators would find DNA samples at Guthrie’s residence, which could significantly aid in the investigation. “I would be hopeful that they found at least a few items of evidence,” she stated, highlighting the importance of saliva, blood, and semen for DNA analysis.
The significance of the suspect’s appearance was also noted. Surveillance images released by the FBI show a masked individual on Guthrie’s porch during the time of her disappearance. Stonehouse pointed out that the suspect’s lack of a mask over his mouth and nose increases the likelihood of finding saliva samples, which can be crucial for DNA profiling. “It’s just a matter of locating it and finding it,” she added.
Investigative Insights and Community Support
Retired FBI agent Maureen O’Connell provided additional insights, suggesting that the blood found at the scene could indicate that Guthrie was forcibly taken. “What I do believe is she was carried out. I don’t believe she walked out,” O’Connell stated. She based her conclusions on the presence of blood droplets and the absence of footprints, indicating that the suspect may have been assisted by another individual.
The ongoing investigation has drawn significant attention, with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department emphasizing its commitment to finding Guthrie. In a statement issued on February 27, they confirmed, “This remains an active investigation and will continue until Nancy Guthrie is located or all leads have been exhausted.” Patrols in the Guthrie neighborhood will remain in place as the investigation progresses.
Community support has been overwhelming. Savannah Guthrie took to Instagram last week to express gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers, urging everyone to continue hoping for her mother’s safe return. “Please don’t stop praying and hoping with us. Bring her home,” she wrote.
In a bid to expedite the investigation, Nancy Guthrie’s family has announced a reward of $1 million for information leading to her recovery, along with an additional reward of over $200,000 for tips regarding her whereabouts or the arrest of those involved in her disappearance. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The case highlights the critical role of forensic science in contemporary investigations, with DNA analysis serving as a vital tool in the pursuit of justice and resolution for families affected by such tragedies.
