Founders Academy Student Named Finalist for Global Filipino Icon 2026

Serena Althea Blaire D. Mackay, a junior at The Founders Academy Public Charter School in Manchester, New Hampshire, has been named one of the ten finalists for the Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2026. Selected from nearly 200 entries worldwide, Mackay stands out as the youngest nominee in the Top 10 Finalists category.

Mackay, who immigrated to the United States just a year ago at the age of 15, has already cultivated an impressive portfolio of achievements. As the founder and executive director of the LUHOG Youth Organization, she leads a nonprofit initiative aimed at empowering young Filipinos through civic education and advocacy in three countries. Her organization equips youth with essential tools to comprehend power, history, and policy, while also providing pathways for actionable engagement.

Among her notable contributions, Mackay played a significant role in organizing “MAMULAT: The Pulse of Youth in Political Consciousness,” a webinar focused on the 1987 Philippine Constitution. At the age of 14, she became the youngest intern at the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO), where her work involved grant research and database development related to public health and policy advocacy.

In 2025, Mackay led a pivotal initiative as the sole project proponent for Tayo’s Annual Virtual Youth Summit, which gathered young Filipino leaders to address disinformation and promote historical accuracy. Additionally, she co-founded the Tayo Youth Advisory Council, which aims to incorporate youth perspectives into organizational governance. Serving as its external chair, Mackay oversees committees focused on policy, advocacy, and volunteer engagement.

Reflecting on her transition from the Philippines to the United States, Mackay expressed the challenges she faced. “Knowing that there is a place like The Founders Academy providing me with a civic education to pursue my work in historical awareness, uplift youth voices, and nurture my love for community service made the adjustment worthwhile,” she stated. She also praised the support from both friends and faculty at the academy, highlighting their genuine dedication to student success.

Mackay remains actively involved in her school community. She serves as the Student Body Vice President, co-captains the Speech and Debate Club, and holds the position of Secretary in the National Honor Society. Cassie Hayes, Dean of School, remarked, “We are extremely proud of Serena for all of her accomplishments. She embodies the Founders’ mission each and every day.”

The ten finalists, including Mackay, will compete for the title of Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2026 during the Global Filipino Icon Awards, scheduled for January 31, 2026, in Dubai. The finalists will engage in a panel discussion that will determine the award recipient.
