A four-year-old boy from Oxford, Michigan, has raised over $2,000 for homeless dogs through an inspiring can collection project. Easton Peterson initiated this effort as part of a school assignment, choosing to focus on charity work to help animals in need. His determination to support dogs without homes has transformed a simple school task into a significant community initiative.
Upon learning that many dogs do not have families, Easton felt compelled to act. “Doggies! Because they don’t have homes,” he stated, clearly articulating his motivation. To generate funds for these animals, Easton began collecting cans and bottles, which has become a daily routine for him and his family.
Community Engagement and Support
According to Easton’s mother, Alexandra Peterson, their family now spends Monday through Friday collecting recyclables. “Every single day our trunk is completely full,” she shared, indicating the scale of their efforts. This routine not only brings joy to Easton but also fosters a sense of community involvement. “We’re just so proud,” she added, reflecting the family’s commitment to this cause.
The impact of Easton’s project extends to local organizations, particularly K9 Stray Rescue. Betsy Barnaba, the intake and kennel manager at the rescue, noted that Easton’s contributions have created a “ripple effect” that reaches beyond his individual efforts. “He’s just a 4-year-old boy. The ripple effect has been unbelievable,” Barnaba said.
The positive response to Easton’s initiative has caught the attention of local businesses. Notably, Meijer has started donating to support his cause, further amplifying the community’s collective effort. “It has just been beautiful. It’s almost like that domino effect,” Alexandra Peterson remarked. Barnaba added, “We have dubbed it the kindness train, because it just keeps chugging along,” highlighting the growing support for the initiative.
Future Aspirations and Gratitude
In addition to his philanthropic work, Easton has dreams of becoming a professional golfer. He also enjoys the companionship of his dog, named Hashbrowns. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Easton has a simple message for all those who have supported him: “I love you.”
Betsy Barnaba emphasized the importance of community involvement in their mission, stating, “Without the help of the community… and families like Easton, we can’t do what we do.”
On December 2, 2023, which coincides with Giving Tuesday, Easton and his family plan to visit K9 Stray Rescue to present the total amount raised for the organization. This event underscores not only Easton’s dedication but also the community’s collective effort to bring positive change to the lives of homeless dogs.
