The Hayti community in Durham has officially commenced its Kwanzaa celebrations, a week-long event dedicated to recognizing and honoring African American heritage, family, and community values. The festivities began on December 26, 2023, and have drawn hundreds of participants from the Triangle region.

According to Aya Shabu, Co-Director of the Hayti Legacy Kwanzaa, Kwanzaa serves as an important cultural holiday. “This is an African American cultural holiday, an opportunity to celebrate our history, but also our future, our values, and each other,” she stated, emphasizing the significance of the week.
Kwanzaa, which originated in the United States in 1966, is celebrated annually from December 26 to January 1. It focuses on seven principles, known as the Nguzo Saba, which promote community, family, and cultural pride. Events across the Triangle are designed to engage people of all ages, fostering connections and understanding among participants.

The Hayti celebrations feature a variety of activities, including workshops, cultural performances, and communal meals. These events are designed to educate attendees about the principles of Kwanzaa while also providing a space for reflection and fellowship.
