Affordability emerged as a significant concern for homebuyers in 2025. With rising mortgage rates and tighter budgets, many shifted their focus from competitive hot markets to maximizing the value of their investments. According to the Realtor.com® Most for Your Money Metro 2025 report, certain major metropolitan areas offered considerably more space for lower prices compared to the national trends.
Throughout the year, the national median price per square foot stood at approximately $229. However, several cities provided better value by combining lower costs per square foot with larger home sizes. Anthony Smith, senior economist at Realtor.com, noted, “In 2025, the ‘Most for Your Money’ metro wasn’t about chasing the lowest sticker price alone. It reflected how far a buyer’s budget could stretch in terms of space.”
Top U.S. Metros for Homebuyers in 2025
The report identified three Texas cities among the top five markets offering the best value for homebuyers. Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas distinguished themselves by providing larger homes at more affordable prices. Smith explained that Texas metros consistently paired lower prices per square foot with larger homes, allowing buyers to maximize their investment.
In Houston, the median listing price per square foot was $174, with a median home price of $354,999 and an average home size of 2,093 square feet. This figure is 273 square feet larger than the national median home size of 1,820 square feet. Smith described Houston as “one of the most compelling large-market options in the country” for buyers focused on maximizing space.
San Antonio also made its mark with a median listing price per square foot of $179 and a median listing price of $324,900. The typical home size in the area was 1,933 square feet. Daniel Cabrera, owner and founder of Sell My House Fast SA TX, highlighted that homes priced under $200 per square foot come with desirable features like flex rooms, game rooms, and spacious garages.
The Atlanta metro area provided value through larger typical home sizes, with a median listing price of $196 per square foot and a median price of $410,000. The average home size reached 2,164 square feet. According to real estate professional and attorney Bruce Ailion, many buyers relocating from cities like New York and Chicago are attracted to Atlanta’s larger homes and amenities.
In the Dallas–Fort Worth area, the median listing price per square foot was $204, with a median home price of $420,000 and a typical home size of 2,154 square feet. Smith noted that the region has one of the largest typical home sizes among major metros, appealing to those seeking a larger property or lot.
Chicago’s Competitive Market
Chicago offered a different value proposition. With a median listing price per square foot of $212 and a median price of $357,000, the typical home size was smaller at 1,700 square feet. Smith pointed out that while homes in Chicago are generally smaller compared to many Sun Belt metros, the lower overall prices and competitive price per square foot kept the market attractive for buyers prioritizing cost over size.
As homebuyers navigate an increasingly complex housing market, the 2025 findings underscore a significant shift in preferences. With a focus on affordability and value, cities like Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas not only offer lower prices but also larger living spaces, making them top contenders for those looking to maximize their housing investment.
