Madison County Shines Green for Veterans from Nov. 4-11
Madison County, New York, will illuminate the Madison County Courthouse in green from November 4 to 11, 2023, in recognition of Veterans Day. This marks the fifth year that the county has participated in Operation Green Light, a nationwide initiative aimed at supporting military veterans. The campaign, which began in 2021, is spearheaded by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) in collaboration with the National Association of Counties (NACo).
The goal of Operation Green Light is to raise awareness about the challenges many veterans face and inform them about the resources available at local, state, and federal levels. Chairman of the Madison County Board, James J. Cunningham, expressed the county’s gratitude, stating, “Operation Green Light is just one small way we can show our veterans how much we appreciate the sacrifices they made for our safety and security.”
Community Involvement Encouraged
In addition to the courthouse lighting, Madison County encourages local municipalities, businesses, and residents to participate by changing at least one light to a green bulb. This initiative can involve exterior lights visible to the community or interior lights that might prompt conversations about supporting veterans.
Cunningham emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging residents to reach out to veterans they know. Simple gestures, such as offering a ride to a medical appointment or engaging in a friendly conversation, can have a significant impact. “By shining a green light, we let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported,” he said.
While the main event occurs during the week of Veterans Day, participants are encouraged to continue the initiative throughout the year. Residents can share their involvement on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
Support Networks for Veterans
Ron Raymer, Director of the Madison County Veterans Service Agency and a veteran himself, highlighted the campaign’s importance. He stated, “Operation Green Light is a great initiative and opportunity to send a strong and highly visible message to both the veteran community and active-duty service members alike who may call Madison County home.” He noted that the initiative reflects the county’s commitment to supporting veterans.
For veterans in need of assistance, the Madison County Veterans Service Agency is available for support. They can be reached at (315) 366-2395 or through their website at www.madisoncounty.ny.gov. Veteran peer counselors can connect individuals with federal, state, and local benefits and services.
