Man Honors Father’s Holiday Legacy with Dazzling Christmas Display

In a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Timothy Newsome has transformed his yard into a vibrant holiday display, continuing a cherished family tradition. The dazzling scene, reminiscent of the festive spirit his father embodied, features a staggering 8,080 light bulbs, 256 stake nails, and over 250 plastic figurines, making it a focal point for the community in Westlake.

Eddie JLP Newsome, Timothy’s father, was known for his love of Christmas and his dedication to creating the brightest display on the block. This joyful ritual began long before Timothy’s birth, instilling a sense of wonder that would last for generations. “He first began decorating at the end of Patin Road in Westlake,” Timothy shared. “He later moved to the corner of Garden and Carlin, where I grew up.”

Timothy recalls his father as a man who took immense pride in holiday decorations, amassing a collection that included over 300 plastic figurines. The family display became so popular that people traveled from across Texas to witness it each year. “We always felt it was pretty special,” Timothy reflected.

As a child, Timothy eagerly participated in the decorating alongside his five siblings. Even as he moved into adulthood, he continued the tradition at his home on Arthur Street. “Even in his last Christmas with us, Dad was outside helping me decorate my yard,” he said, recalling the bittersweet memories. Eddie passed away on May 5, 2024, leaving a legacy of joy and festive spirit.

Setting up the display, which Timothy affectionately calls “Newsome’s Old Fashioned Christmas Lights,” is a labor of love that takes about two weeks. This year’s setup includes 70 strings of lights, 38 wooden decorations, and a variety of festive elements designed to engage the community. “We’ve added little cutouts for people to take pictures with their faces popping through, with the lights in the backdrop,” Timothy noted.

In a touching gesture, Timothy keeps an empty chair outside as a symbol of his father’s presence. “I know he’s still there with me,” he said. “This was something that was so special between me and my dad that I want to continue it for the next generation.” He aims to replicate the joy and excitement his father brought to the community through their displays.

The enthusiasm for Christmas lights has spread beyond Timothy’s yard. His neighbors have joined in the festivities, offering support and allowing Timothy to extend his display into their properties. “My neighbors are awesome and work well with me on the lights,” he commented. “I love all the sweet comments, compliments, and gestures from people who enjoy the lights each year.”

Timothy’s tribute is not just about the lights; it’s about preserving memories and sharing joy. He hopes that all who pass by will feel the same magic his father created for so many years. Through this act of remembrance, Timothy Newsome not only honors his father’s legacy but also fosters a sense of community during the holiday season.
