Martin House Breaks Ground on New Child Advocacy Facility in Longview

The Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center in Longview, Texas, has officially commenced construction on a larger facility designed to better serve abused children and their families. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 5, 2023, marking a significant step toward addressing the growing need for child advocacy services in East Texas.

New Facility to Enhance Services for Vulnerable Children

The new building will span 10,000 square feet, nearly three times the size of the existing facility located on Garfield Drive. This expansion is essential as Martin House provides critical support to children and families across Gregg, Harrison, Marion, and Upshur counties. The organization has expressed that the new space will facilitate a more child-friendly environment, enhancing confidentiality for those receiving services.

According to a statement from the nonprofit organization, “The new facility will create child-friendly spaces more suitable for the specific services. Among these are separate waiting areas for forensic and therapy clients as well as office space for staff and work areas for law enforcement and social services.” This approach aims to provide a safer, more supportive atmosphere for children who have experienced abuse, ensuring they receive the care they need.

Funding Progress and Community Support

Martin House has been actively raising funds for the project, with a target goal of $6.25 million. As of now, 94% of the funds have already been committed. Michael Clements Jr., the capital campaign chair, emphasized the community’s commitment to this cause during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Key figures present at the event included Roxanne Stevenson, CEO of Martin House; Melanie Mathews, chair of the board of directors; Bill Stoudt, Gregg County Judge; and Kristen Ishihara, Mayor of Longview. Community supporters, members of the board of directors, staff, local officials, and campaign committee members also attended, showcasing the broad support for this vital initiative.

Martin House is one of 72 child advocacy centers in Texas and is part of approximately 800 centers nationwide. The organization plays a crucial role in the community, serving over 900 children and their families each year. The new facility is poised to enhance their capacity to offer vital services and support, reinforcing the commitment to protecting vulnerable children in the region.
